Having just gone to a Greek Festival, I was inspired to make something from the Greek cuisine. Since eggplants are in abundance right now, why not Melitzanosalata? It is made of wholesome ingredients: vegetables, olive oil, lemon juice... What a great appetizer or a side to cool you off on a hot summer day! Enjoy it with a slice of baguette or on a pita.
Going to World Market is like taking an excursion around the world. This week I've been getting emails from them advertising 50% off clearance. So I decided to take a look. Below are some of my finds. You can take a look online (www.worldmarket.com) because the sale applies to online purchases as well. Don't forget to go through a cash-back site (Ebates, Mr. Rebates) to get a percentage of your purchase back.
These Slow Cooker Cheese-Stuffed Pears are a great appetizer. The honey and apricots make them on the sweeter side, but you can make them spicier, or saltier, or modify the stuffing to your liking. These are perfect to enjoy with some wine.
I love Lancôme makeup. You can see the difference in quality from drugstore brands. My face becomes luminescent, radiant when I wear Lancôme makeup, and I always get compliments on it. So this weekend I went to Macy's to buy a Lancôme mascara, and they happened to offer gift with a $35 purchase. The gift did not include a mascara, however. So I found a makeup kit (Macy's exclusive) for $45, which included an eye shadow set with 5 colors, a full-size Definicil mascara, a cils booster, and a lipstick! And I got the free gift, which included a makeup bag, serum, moisturizer, body lotion, blush, lipstick and a sample size mascara! Right now, if you get it online, you also get a sample size fragrance. Go to Macys.com but don't forget to go through a cashback site to get a percentage back on your purchase. Go through Ebates to get 6% back and a $10 gift card for signing up, or Mr. Rebates to get 5% back, plus $7.50 for signing up.
I went to the farmer's market and got carried away with buying fruit. I bought too many plums, and since no one was eating them, it was time to make something with them. This pudding turned out absolutely amazing. It is very fast to make, and it will disappear just as fast.
There is a store in our town that has mostly Asian food, but it also has Russian, Mexican and Middle-Eastern foods. I love going there because it's like an excursion into another culture. Here are some photos from my last trip.
Some alligator feet? I hear they taste like chicken. Although, I am pretty sure my cookbook does not have any alligator recipes.
I read that Robinson Crusoe ate turtle soup but I not being in a desperate situation on an uninhabited island and all, I could not kill a cute little turtle splashing in the pot.
All kinds of sake.
Miso soup and wasabi.
Armenian brandy in beautiful bottles of various shapes and sizes. Can you spot a dragon?
When I first read the synopsis for Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, I wasn't even sure I wanted to read it. The story sounded depressing, dark. However, when I saw it at the top of the New York Times bestsellers list, I decided to order it.
Gone Girl is a story of a husband and wife and the progression of their relationship (and marriage) from wonderful to terrible. Nick Dunne, the husband, comes home one day to find his wife, Amy, missing. From then on his lies unravel, keeping the reader guessing as to what happened to Amy and who is responsible for her disappearance and likely death.
The story is told in a narrative format from Nick's point of view starting on the day of Amy's disappearance. Amy's side is told through her diary entries leading up to her disappearance.
When I first started reading the book, I wasn't sure I was going to stick with it. It annoyed me that all Nick did was complain about his wife. And then the story gripped me and now I am looking forward to nighttime, when I can find out more. Who did it? How did it happen?
It is a true suspense, which keeps you guessing. It is masterful and engaging. You can feel each character's emotion, anger and stress.
Do you want a suspenseful read, a masterfully-written story? One you cannot wait to get back to? This is it.
